Propane smells like rotten eggs, a dead animal, or a skunk’s spray. Some people may have difficulty smelling propane due to a medical condition, age (older people may have a reduced sense of smell); or the effects of medication, alcohol, tobacco or drugs.

We always recommend getting a propane gas detector that can alarm you of a gas leak.

Never ignore the smell of propane even if your propane detector has not sounded an alarm.

If you smell propane:

1. Immediately put out all open flames and smoking materials and exit the home or building. Do NOT operate any lights, phones or appliances as these could be a source of ignition and cause an explosion.
2. Leave the area immediately and shut the gas off at the propane tank.
3. Call your propane retailer right away from a neighbor’s house or use a cell phone from a safe distance. If you can’t reach your propane dealer, call 911 or your local fire department.

A leak check will need to be done by a qualified propane dealer before the system is returned to service.

A leak check is required if you ever smell propane, if the tank runs out of propane, any interruption of service, new tenant in a rental home or if you are a new customer that we have not serviced.

NEVER let your tank run out of propane. This can cause your appliance pilots to go out and could be dangerous. A leak check is required if the tank runs out of gas.

During the leak check, we will test for leaks, inspect the overall condition of the piping system, inspect gas vents on vented appliances and spray the fittings on the tank for leaks. Any disconnected appliance or uncapped gas valve can be very dangerous. All unused gas valves MUST be capped.

It’s a good idea to have your system checked, especially if you can’t remember the last time it was done.

Carbon Monoxide is an odorless gas that is very dangerous. It is created by gas appliances that are not operating correctly or an appliance that has a blocked vent. At certain levels CO can be deadly.

We always recommend having multiple CO and fire alarms installed in your home.

All gas appliances need to be serviced by a qualified service technician that has the training to install, inspect, service, repair, and maintain the appliances. It’s a good idea to have your propane furnaces and heaters inspected prior to every heating season.
